top 10 most useful pregnancy clothes: first trimester

Seven and a half months ago, I found out I was pregnant and all of a sudden life would never again be the same. It was exciting and overwhelming and joyful. I dreamed so many details about my baby’s future — what he/she might look like and what kinds of sports he/she may like and where he/she could go to college and on and on. So many thoughts in so little time.

However, amidst all this excitement, I have to admit that one of the things I wasn’t looking forward to was the physical change that usually takes place during the first trimester. You know, the pudgy stage. Where you don’t look so much like you’re pregnant as you do like you indulged in a few too many handfuls of fudge over the holidays. I’ve heard many a pregnant friend describe their experience with this stage, and it’s never been given very good reviews.

So as a means of preserving my memory for next time (whenever baby #2 happens to come along) and passing along a small piece of  wisdom to those who have either already reached this (squishy) milestone or are hoping to someday reach it, I give you this:

my top 10 most useful clothes for the first trimester

A few notes, however, before I begin.

#1: My first trimester occupied the months of November to February, which means mild to cold weather (in SoCal).

#2: I waited until nearly the end of the first trimester (10.5 weeks) before I made a public announcement (read: that’s when the pregnancy Facebook status went up). So until then, I was under cover.

#3: My roles during the first trimester included being a graduate student at a private university and interning at a pediatric therapy clinic, so certain standards of dress were already in place.

#4: I can put together cute outfits, but I’m no fashionista…my two favorite places to buy clothes are Target and thrift stores. Critique accordingly.

#5: Clothing items are shown in no particular order of significance. Different needs for different days. All clothes displayed are clothes that I already owned prior to becoming pregnant, unless otherwise specified.

Here we go!

1. Sweatshirts. They keep the chill out and the belly in.

{The black zip-up hoodie was purchased for pregnancy at the local Goodwill}

2. Long sweaters. Button them up or leave them hanging open. Great for layering.

3. Short jackets/sweaters. Also great for layering.

{The black one was inexpensively purchased for pregnancy at Burlington Coat Factory and is indeed a maternity top}

4. Loose fitting tops. Flowy and professional, but not obvious.

{Both were inexpensively purchased for pregnancy from Burlington Coat Factory, but neither are maternity tops}

5. Stretchy tanks tops. Spaghetti straps and t-back will layer easily under the above items and last the entire pregnancy. 92% nylon, 8% spandex.

{Both were inexpensively purchased for pregnancy from Burlington Coat Factory, but neither are maternity tanks}

6. Stretchy black dress pants. Comfy and baggy enough to feel like sweatpants, but fitted enough to function like dress pants…with an elastic waist. 95% polyester, 5% spandex.

{These were inexpensively purchased for pregnancy from Burlington Coat Factory and are not maternity pants}

7. Stretch jeans. They make life easier and can be modified later on to keep up with your belly.

8. Yoga pants. Best invention ever. Plus, the waist rolls down.

9. Boots. Tuck those jeans or yoga pants into them and you’re comfortably in business.

10. Scarf. What better than something that is designed to hang right in front of your belly?

. . .

So there you have it. Those are the top 10 items of clothing that I found to be most useful during my first trimester of pregnancy. If you put them together, the combinations can be endless. Here are a few I liked to utilize…

      Seven weeks, yay congrats! Yes, you’ll feel like you ate way too many pizza and donuts until well into the 2nd trimester, so finding clothes that make you feel good is a must! I actually ended up blogging week by week through my entire pregnancy last year, so feel free to follow the posts as you progress. Best of luck to you and your new little one!
